2 children with measles symptoms die in Bogura, Cox’s Bazar
Two children have died with measles symptoms in Cox's Bazar and Bogura today (1 April), while at least 44 others are currently undergoing treatment in hospitals in the two districts.
In Bogura, a 10-month-old child named Humaira died at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital after being admitted with measles symptoms.
Hospital spokesperson and Deputy Director Md Monjur-e-Murshid confirmed the matter, saying the child, a resident of Sherpur upazila, had been admitted a day earlier with rashes. She died around 3:30am.
The hospital has opened an isolation unit for suspected measles cases, where 10 children are currently receiving treatment. "So far, we have tested 18 children for measles, but none have tested positive," he added.
Civil Surgeon Dr Md Khurshid Alam said 38 samples have been sent for testing in the district, with two confirmed measles cases so far.
In a separate incident, a child admitted with measles symptoms died at Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital.
As of this evening, a total of 34 patients with similar symptoms were hospitalised there, according to hospital statistician Selim Uddin.
He said 37 patients were admitted yesterday, of whom 16 were discharged, while 13 new patients were admitted today, bringing the current total to 34.
Assistant Registrar of the hospital's paediatric department Dr Shahidul Alam said the deceased child was also suffering from pneumonia and oral ulcers.
"The child had difficulty eating, so a feeding tube was inserted. However, the condition deteriorated after the guardians mistakenly tried to feed orally, and despite our best efforts, we could not save the child," he said.
