HC writ seeks high-level probe into 47 child deaths from measles
The writ also seeks a directive to keep schools closed until the outbreak is brought under control.
A Supreme Court lawyer has filed a writ petition with the High Court, seeking the formation of a high-level investigation committee over the deaths of 47 children from measles across the country.
The writ also seeks a directive to keep schools closed until the outbreak is brought under control.
The petition was filed today (2 April) by lawyer Latif Jahan Purnima, who told journalist that the matter is expected to be heard next week.
The Secretary of the Health Services Division under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and other relevant government authorities have been named as respondents in the petition.
In the petition, the court has been requested to direct the respondents to submit a comprehensive report detailing the number of deaths, extent of infections, vaccination coverage, vaccine availability, and measures taken so far.
the writ seeks a time-bound independent investigation to determine the causes behind the failure to ensure adequate vaccination coverage, the reasons for vaccine shortages, and the delays in implementing preventive measures.
The petition argues that the failure to ensure timely vaccination, the lack of medical facilities, and the deficiency in emergency response constitute a direct violation of Articles 27, 31, and 32 of the Constitution of Bangladesh, which safeguard the right to life and equal protection under the law.
The petitioner also urged the court to direct the authorities to immediately undertake a nationwide emergency measles vaccination campaign and ensure an adequate and uninterrupted supply of vaccines, syringes, and necessary logistics.
