HC orders halt to police station construction on protected wetland in Dhaka’s Malibagh
Advocate Morshed said that the housing and public works ministry had allocated 50% land of a waterbody in Malibagh (Chowdhurypara Jheel) for the construction of a permanent building for Rampura Police Station
The High Court has ordered a halt to the construction of a permanent police station building at Malibagh Chowdhurypara in Dhaka, located on a protected wetland as designated in the Detailed Area Plan (DAP) of the capital.
The bench of Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque and Justice Aynun Nahar Sidiqua passed the order today (2 November).
Senior lawyer Manzil Morshed appeared for the petitioner, Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB).
Speaking to journalists, Advocate Morshed said that the housing and public works ministry had allocated 50% land of a waterbody in Malibagh (Chowdhurypara Jheel) for the construction of a permanent building for Rampura Police Station.
A report regarding the allocation was published in newspapers on 21 October, following which HRPB filed a writ petition on 30 October seeking judicial intervention, he added.
During the hearing, Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Nur Mohammad Azam, representing the state, sought time until 5 November. The court then verbally directed that all construction work must remain suspended until that date and instructed the DAG to ensure compliance with the order.
