HC grants bail to Anis Alamgir in anti-terrorism case
However, it was later found that there were other cases pending against him, so he will not be released now, said lawyers.
The High Court has granted bail to journalist Anis Alamgir in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Uttara West Police Station in the capital.
The bail order was issued today (5 March) by a High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher.
Lawyer Aslam Mia argued for the bail petition before the court and later confirmed the order to the media.
However, it was later found that there were other cases pending against him, so he will not be released now, said lawyers.
Earlier, on 22 January, a Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court had rejected Alamgir's bail petition.
The case was filed in the early hours of 15 December last year by Ariyan Ahmed, who claimed to be a central organiser of the July Revolutionary Alliance. The complaint accused Anis Alamgir and three others, actor Meher Afroz Shaon, model Maria Kispotta, and media personality Imtu Ratish Imtiaz, of making provocative statements and spreading propaganda.
The plaintiff alleged that the accused made remarks inciting violence allegedly linked to Awami League supporters and made derogatory comments about the July uprising. He also claimed that despite the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina leaving the country following the mass uprising in July, her supporters were attempting to destabilise the country and state institutions.
The complaint further alleged that the accused were trying to promote banned political organisations, including the Awami League, through social media posts and television talk shows.
On 14 December last year, members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) took Anis Alamgir to their office for questioning from a gym in the capital's Dhanmondi area. He was later shown arrested in the case and produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka on 15 December.
