Ex-CJ Khairul Haque finally released on bail
The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Khairul, 82, from his Dhanmondi residence on July 24 last year.
After spending more than one year behind bars, former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque has been released from the Special Central Jail in Keraniganj on bail granted by the Supreme Court.
Jailer Md Masud Hasan Jewel of the Department of Prisons told The Business Standard that Khairul walked out of the jail around 4:15pm today (19 August).
He could not confirm who had come to receive the former chief justice at the jail gate.
The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Khairul, 82, from his Dhanmondi residence on July 24 last year. He was later shown arrested in nine cases.
Over the months, he secured bail in eight of those cases. However, on 2 July this year, police moved the court to have him arrested in a case filed over alleged attempted murder and explosives-related offences that happened during the 2024 July Uprising.
The investigating officer of the case filed at Banani Police Station sought permission from the court to show Khairul arrested in the case. Following the application, he was formally shown arrested in the case on 8 July.
A lower court rejected Khairul's bail petition on 27 July. He then moved the High Court on 9 August, which granted him interim bail the following day.
On 17 August, the Appellate Division Chamber Court upheld the High Court order and cleared the way for the former chief justice's release unless he is detained in another case.
