The government is working to formulate a policy for controlling the production and cultivation of tobacco, Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter said today (19 February).
"Due to tobacco cultivation, many people are suffering in various parts of the country, including Kushtia. Health, environment and even human food are being damaged," she said.
The adviser said this while speaking as the chief guest at a view exchange meeting with fisheries and livestock farmers at the Kushtia Deputy Commissioner's conference room, said a press release

Farida said that farmers in the fisheries and livestock sectors are paying more electricity bills than those in the agriculture sector.
"A request has already been made to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources to overcome this situation. If the Ministry of Finance provides subsidy, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources will take steps to supply power at reduced rates to fisheries and livestock sectors," he added.
When the farmers proposed to provide low-interest loans in the fisheries and livestock sector, the adviser said the government has already been requested to establish a fisheries and livestock development bank.
"If the bank is established, the farmers will get low-interest loans like in the agriculture sector," she added.
Kushtia District Administration and Directorate of Fisheries and Livestock organised the view exchange meeting.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Md. Abdul Wadud presided over the meeting while Superintendent of Police Md. Mizanur Rahman, District Fisheries Officer Md. Abdul Bari, District Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Al Mamun Hossain Mondal, senior officials of various government departments of the district and anti-discrimination student representatives were present on the occasion.
