Govt appoints new UNOs in 77 more upazilas ahead of polls

The government has appointed new upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs) in 77 more upazilas as part of an administrative reshuffle ahead of the national election.
The officers assigned as UNOs have been empowered under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898 to function as executive magistrates within their jurisdictions, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration today (1 December).
The newly appointed UNO's are senior assistant secretary-level officers, and their new appointment has been posted through eight separate gazette notifications.
According to the notifications, new UNOs have been appointed in 18 upazilas under Dhaka division, four in Barishal, seven in Chattogram, 12 in Khulna, 11 in Rangpur, 14 in Rajshahi, eight in Sylhet and three in Mymensingh.
The officers have been instructed to join their new postings by Thursday (4 December).
Earlier, on 26 November, the government appointed new UNOs in 166 upazilas.
With the latest round of postings, a total of 243 upazilas have now received new UNOs.
