Fire damaged nearly 200 rooms on 4 floors of secretariat building: PWD official

The 26 December fire damaged at least 200 rooms across the four floors of the secretariat's building 7, said Public Works Department (PWD) Deputy Assistant Engineer Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan said today (30 December).

"There are 40 to 50 rooms on each of the floors which suffered the most damage. Some are completely damaged while some are partially damaged," he said while talking to reporters at the secretariat premises this afternoon.

Criminals within the police will be brought to justice: CA Yunus

Criminals within the police force will be brought to justice, the interim government's Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus said today (30 December).

They (police) would have to work with the spirit of the 2024 uprising, he said this morning during a virtual meeting with officials from 31 districts in four divisions.

EC to begin door-to-door voter update on 20 Jan

The Election Commission will begin updating the voter list through a door-to-door campaign starting on 20 January 2025, according to an EC official.

"The training programme for officials involved in this update will be completed by 5 January," said the official who spoke to The Business Standard on condition of anonymity.

DU restricts outsiders' entry on 31st night

The Dhaka University (DU) administration has announced restrictions on outsiders' entry to the campus on the night of 31 December to ensure the safety and security of its students.

Bangladesh Bank caps remittance collection rate at Tk123 per dollar: Spokesperson

The Bangladesh Bank has officially announced a maximum exchange rate of Tk123 per dollar for remittance collection in a bid to stabilise exchange rates. Earlier, the rate was said to officially be Tk120.

Google Search erases Bangladeshi journalism in favour of Indian media: Report

Google Search prioritises ultranationalist outlets more prominently, thereby fueling a global disinformation campaign amid heightened diplomatic tensions.

According to a report published by Tech Global Institute, for instance the search engine giant populates its search with content from Indian media over Bangladeshi media – even when the actual issue in question has taken place in Bangladesh.

Janata Bank auctions lands of S Alam Refined Sugar, Super Edible Oil to recover loans

State-owned Janata Bank has put 2,971 decimals of land from S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Limited, a company of the controversial S Alam Group, up for auction to recover outstanding loans.

It also put up for auction land worth Tk1,008 crore (as of 30 Nov) belonging to S Alam Super Edible Oil.

Jimmy Carter, former US president and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, dead at 100

Jimmy Carter, the earnest Georgia peanut farmer who as US president struggled with a bad economy and the Iran hostage crisis but brokered peace between Israel and Egypt and later received the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work, died at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday, the Carter Center said. He was 100.

Azerbaijan president says crashed plane was shot at from Russia

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said on Sunday that a passenger plane that crashed last week, killing 38 people, had been damaged by accidental shooting from the ground in Russia, adding that some in Russia had lied about the cause of the disaster.

19, including Forest Department workers, abducted from Teknaf hill

Nineteen people, including three Forest Department workers, were abducted from Teknaf's hilly Jadimora area in Hnila union at around 10am today (30 December).
