A young man from Gazipur assaulted policemen inside the Pallabi Police Station in the capital and assaulted several officers early today (11 March).
Three police officers, including Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazrul Islam, were injured in the incident. Police later detained the man, identified as Abdur Razzak Fahim, 23, and three others.
"Nasir, an assistant sub-inspector [ASI] injured during the assault was taken to Kurmitola Hospital, where an X-ray revealed that one of his fingers was broken," said OC Nazrul Islam.
He said preparations are underway to file a case over the attack.
The assault took place around 1:45am in the duty officer's room at the police station. Those injured are OC Nazrul Islam, Second Officer Shariful Islam, and ASI (armed) Md Nasir.
Nazrul said a young man visited the station shortly before 2am asking if police were aware of a murder that had taken place in the area. In response, he told the youth that he was not aware of any such incident.
The youth then claimed that police were hiding information about the incident and said the duty officer knew about it. Subsequently, the OC took the young man to the duty officer's room.
Nazrul said when asked for identification, the youth began assaulting him.
"When ASI Nasir tried to intervene, the young man broke one of his fingers. When the second officer arrived, the attacker punched him in the forehead, causing it to swell. He was subsequently detained," he added.
After being detained the youth revealed that three more individuals were waiting in a car outside. When questioned, they claimed they came from Gazipur for an outing.
"These three individuals were later brought to the station as well," he added.
