2, including ‘gang leader’, held over attack on police in Ctg

Chattogram police have arrested two men for their alleged involvement in last week's attack on law enforcers during a raid that left a police officer injured.
Shakil, 27, described by police as the "gang leader," was detained early Sunday from the front seat of a container truck on the city's Outer Ring Road in Patenga. The raid was led by Bandar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aftab Uddin, according to a press release from Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).
Based on information from Shakil, police later picked up his associate Arif Hossain, 32, from an abandoned tin-shed sawmill in the Ishan Mistrirhat area under Bandar Police Station.
The CMP said a locally-made one-barrel gun, three cartridges, and a sharp machete were recovered during the operation.
According to police, around 11:30pm on 11 August, Shakil allegedly led a sudden procession in the Ishan Mistrirhat Khalpar area, joined by supporters from different political wings.
When a police team reached the spot, Shakil and his associates reportedly attacked them with sharp weapons, leaving Sub-Inspector Abu Sayeed Rana of Bandar Police Station critically injured.
Later that night, police launched a drive and arrested 18 suspects, filing two cases over the incident. Shakil, however, had managed to flee.
Bandar police said Shakil is accused in at least nine cases in Dhaka and Chattogram, including charges of illegal arms possession, attempted murder, assault, theft, and offences under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
So far, 33 suspects have been arrested in connection with the police attack.
