The body of a fisherman who was allegedly beaten and thrown into the sea for protesting illegal sand extraction was recovered today (21 February) from the Sandwip Channel of Chattogram in Sitakunda's Barabkunda area after four days.
The deceased identified as Ram Jaladas, 32, was a resident of the fishing community in Madhyam Mahmudabad village in Barbakunda union.
"We retrieved the body this morning after it washed ashore at Guliakhali Beach in Muradpur Union," Waliuddin Akber, in-charge of Kumira Naval Police outpost, told The Business Standard.
"Local fishermen saw the body lying in the mud. They later informed the relatives of the deceased. After receiving information from the relatives, members of the Naval Police went to the spot and recovered the body," he said.
The officer further said after an initial report, his body will be sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
According to police, Ram Jaladas went fishing in the sea with his younger brother Liton Jaladas around 10:30am last Monday. At that time, some people were illegally using a dredger to lift sand and fill a bulkhead (sand-carrying vessel).
A net of fishermen got tangled in the propeller of the bulkhead. Ram protested while cutting the net. At that time, the people engaged in sand extraction got angry and hit him on the head. Later, they beat him and threw him into the sea.
