National polls: EU ready to assist Bangladesh with funding, expertise in line with int'l standards
EU Ambassador Michael Miller says support includes a significant financial package as well as their experience and expertise

The European Union will support Bangladesh's upcoming election in line with international standards, European Union (EU) Ambassador in Dhaka Michael Miller said today (16 March).
Following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission (EC) headquarters in Dhaka, Miller told reporters that the EU's support would include financial assistance, expertise, and an offer to deploy an election observation mission if requested.
"This support includes a significant financial package as well as our experience and expertise. We also extend our offer to deploy an election observation mission should the authorities in Bangladesh request it," he stated.
This marks the EU's second meeting with the Election Commission regarding Bangladesh's electoral preparations.
Miller stressed the EU's commitment to standing by Bangladesh during this political transition.
"The EU is a steadfast partner of this country. We support the interim government's ambition to conduct elections in line with the expectations of Bangladeshi citizens as expressed last year," he said.
After the meeting, CEC Nasir told journalists that the EU delegation inquired about Bangladesh's preparations for the election, including the budget.
"We told them we have no financial issues; the government has allocated the necessary funds. However, they want to assist in other ways. They have asked what we need, and we mentioned that the UNDP has already conducted a needs assessment," he said.
According to the CEC, the EU plans to hold a workshop next month with civil society representatives to support voter education, polling agent training, and local election observation.
"They want to see an election that meets international standards, which aligns with our commitment to ensuring free, fair, and credible polls," he said.
"We will work transparently and impartially to create an environment where everyone can perform their duties properly," he added.
