Thunderstorm accompanied by gusty wind with a speed of 45-60 kilometres per hour (kmph) may strike Barishal and eight other districts tonight (14 May), Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecasted.

"Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Jhalakathi, Barguna, Pirojpur, Bagerhat, Gopalganj and Madaripur may experience the thunderstorm with gusty wind," the forecast said.

The forecast was published in a Whatsapp group created by BMD to inform reporters about weather updates instantly.

In the forecast, BMD advised people living in these districts to refrain from going out during lightning strikes.

Stay inside your house for 30 minutes after hearing sound of the lightning strikes for the last time, BMD said.

BMD can forecast thunderstorm one hour before it happens, and the met office has started giving warnings for lightning strikes for the first time in its history, our correspondent reported.

BMD has been forecasting in coordination with the models of some other countries.
