Eviction of Bakkhali River encroachers to begin after full verdict: Shipping adviser
High Court earlier directed the government to identify all encroachers on the Bakkhali, evict them within four months, and take effective steps to control pollution

Shipping Adviser Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain has said a coordinated list of encroachers on the Bakkhali River in Cox's Bazar will be prepared, and eviction will begin once the full High Court verdict is received.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists today (30 August) around noon, following a special coordination meeting at the Cox's Bazar Hilltop Circuit House on freeing the river from pollution and encroachment in line with court orders.
The adviser said hotels accused of polluting the river or harming the environment should be shut down instead of only being fined.
The meeting, which began at 10am, was attended by Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority Chairman Commodore Arif Ahmed Mostafa, Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin, and representatives from the district administration, the Cox's Bazar Development Authority and the Department of Environment.
Notably, on 24 August, the High Court directed the government to identify all encroachers on the Bakkhali, the district's main river, evict them within four months, and take effective steps to control pollution.
The verdict also called for an RS survey to determine the river's current flow and boundaries.
