'Ctg port strike cannot continue': Shipping adviser warns of tough action
Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hussain said the government would take a tough stance over the workers' strike at Chattogram Port, adding that several people have already been detained and further detentions may follow.
"A strike at the Chattogram Port cannot be allowed to continue," he said while speaking to reporters at the Secretariat today (8 February).
Workers at the port began an indefinite strike from 8am today in protest against the government's decision to lease the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) to a foreign company and in support of a four-point demand.
The adviser said, "A handful of people are trying to hold the entire port hostage. Ramadan is only a few days away. We are conducting operations on the rivers every day. Chickpeas, lentils and oil are lying at the outer anchorage."
"They are holding 180 million people hostage. This cannot be allowed to continue. The government has decided to take a hard line. Several people have already been detained, and the rest will also be detained," he added.
