Deep depression over southeast Bay likely to turn into cyclone, maritime ports asked to hoist signal 1

A depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas has intensified into a deep depression and may further develop into a cyclonic storm, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said today (26 October).

According to a BMD bulletin issued this morning, the system was centred at 6:00am near latitude 11.0°N and longitude 87.3°E, about 1,340 km south of Chattogram port, 1,270 km south of Cox's Bazar port, 1,300 km south of Mongla port, and 1,265 km south of Payra port.

It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next phase of development.

The maximum sustained wind speed within 48 kilometres of the deep depression's centre was about 50 km per hour, rising to 60 km per hour in gusts or squalls. The sea will remain rough near the system's centre, the bulletin added.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted distant cautionary signal No. One (R).

All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay and deep sea have been advised to come close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.

Weather outlook

The BMD also forecast that the weather will remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy skies across Bangladesh today, starting from 9:00am.

Day and night temperatures are likely to remain nearly unchanged across the country, it added.

On Saturday, the highest temperature in the country was recorded at 35.5°C in Feni, while the lowest temperature was 21.4°C in Tetulia.

In Dhaka, the sun will set at 5:24pm today and rise at 6:02am tomorrow, the bulletin said.
