US troops complete withdrawal from Iraq after more than two decades
The United States is completing its military withdrawal from Iraq after more than two decades, ending a major chapter in America's military presence in the country. The exit comes as Iran's influence grows and concerns rise over Iraq's security readiness and a possible ISIS resurgence. The U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003, withdrew in 2011, and returned in 2014 to help defeat ISIS. More than 4,500 American service members died in Iraq during the conflict.
As U.S. forces leave their final bases, Iraqi officials and Kurdish commanders are warning about security gaps, while Iran-aligned groups describe the withdrawal as a strategic victory.
