Rampal power plant generates over 760m units in April amid peak demand
This marks the fifth time the Rampal power plant has crossed the 700 million-unit generation milestone in a single month.
The Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company's Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant in Rampal generated more than 760 million units (kWh) of electricity in April 2026, playing a significant role during a period of intense heat and record power demand.
According to a press release issued today (3 May), the plant supplied more than 9% of the country's total electricity generation during the month, helping support the national grid amid the recent heatwave.
The plant operated at an average plant load factor (PLF) of 80% throughout April. During the first week of the month, when electricity demand surged due to extreme temperatures, the plant reportedly operated at 97% PLF, helping stabilise the grid.
This marks the fifth time the Rampal power plant has crossed the 700 million-unit generation milestone in a single month.
Equipped with ultra-supercritical technology, the plant has been designed to ensure higher efficiency and lower environmental impact. It also uses advanced flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) technology to comply with environmental standards while providing uninterrupted baseload power to industrial and residential consumers.
BIFPCL Managing Director Ramanath Pujari said, "Operating the plant at near full capacity during peak demand reflects the strength of its design and the tireless efforts of our team. This achievement is a unique example of our rigorous operational practices and successful cooperation between the two countries."
The plant is currently being run by trained Bangladeshi engineers under the supervision of experts from India's NTPC. While NTPC continues to provide advisory support, the day-to-day operation of the facility by local engineers has been described as a significant step in Bangladesh's growing technical capability.
As Bangladesh moves to strengthen and diversify its energy mix, officials said assets such as the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant will remain critical to maintaining system stability.
The press release said the Rampal project continues to make an important contribution to the country's economic growth and energy security by ensuring reliable and affordable electricity during periods of adverse weather and peak demand.
