A two-day national workshop on big data and machine learning has started at Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET).

University Grants Commission (UGC) member Prof Dr Md Sajjad Hossain inaugurated the event virtually on Wednesday.

Chairman of the workshop Prof Dr Mohammad Shamsul Arefin presided over the programme which would be held online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

During inauguration, Professor Sajjad said big data and machine learning are new dimensions of technology in the current reality and these advanced technologies have to be utilised for economic advancement of the country.

The under-construction Sheikh Kamal IT Business Incubator at CUET will revolutionise the country's education and research which faced overwhelming challenges due to Covid-19, he added.

CUET Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Alam said, "We are already seeing a rapid change in the information and communication technology sector and its benefits."

"Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, robotics, 3D printing, Internet of Things, blockchain and advanced wireless technology will help us meet the challenges of the 4th industrial revolution," he added. 

On the first day of the workshop, Professor John HL Hansen of Eric Johnson School of Engineering and Computer Science, University of Texas, USA and Dr Mohammad Shahadat Hossain, professor of computer science at the University of Chattogram, spoke as keynote speakers.

The event features five keynote sessions, eight technical sessions, seven invited talks and two tutorial sessions.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of CUET, in association with Bangladesh High-Tech Park Authority, Leveraging ICT (LICT) and IEEE Computer Society Bangladesh Chapter, organised the workshop.

Prof Dr Muhammad Kamruzzaman, dean of Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Syed Zahurul Islam, project director (joint secretary) of under-construction Sheikh Kamal IT Business Incubator at CUET, Mohammad Rezaul Karim, project director (joint secretary), LICT of Bangladesh Computer Council, Prof Dr Md Abdur Razzak, pro-VC of Green University Bangladesh, Prof Dr Mohammad Mashiul Haque, director of Sheikh Kamal IT Business Incubator, and Dr Asaduzzaman, chairman of the advisory committee of BDML-2020 workshop, also attended the programme.
