Bangladesh Chhatra League unit of Begum Rokeya University Rangpur (BRUR) burnt the effigy of Vice-chancellor Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah on Thursday night accusing him of making false and derogatory remarks about Education Minister while attending a press briefing in the capital.

They also brought out a torch procession on the campus and declared the VC unwanted on campus.

University BCL president Abu Monnaf Al Tushar Kibria said the movement would continue until VC has been punished and prosecuted for irregularities and corruption.

Pomel Barua, BRUR Bangabandhu Hall Chhatra League, said, "The VC has been committing irregularities and corruption in the name of liaison office from Dhaka day after day. We are condemning and demanding his punishment."

He also noted that Dr Kalimullah must apologise to the nation or else a strong movement will be declared.

Earlier, Mashiur Rahman, general secretary of Bangabandhu Teachers' Council of the university, addressed a press conference at the campus on Thursday afternoon alongside the Vice-president HM Tariqul Islam. They claimed that the VC was absent for around 1100 days out of his over 1300 days of tenure.

The UGC probe committee has reportedly found the involvement of Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah in multiple irregularities in the construction of Sheikh Hasina Hall and Dr Wazed Research and Training Institute on the university campus.

Rejecting the probe report, VC Kalimullah said, "I reject the UGC report. It is prepared after being motivated by Education Minister Dipu Moni. So I think she is not desirable as the education minister."

He also questioned the integrity of UGC, claiming, "I work for 20-22 hours daily for the university, and take rest for only 2/3 hours."

The Ministry of Education has spurned the allegations made by Professor Kalimullah, vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), against the ministry and described his remarks as untrue, fabricated, baseless and intentional.
