Dismantling fascism is not just about destruction, but rebuilding: Adviser Mahfuj Alam

The abolition of a fascist system is not merely about dismantling but also about building an alternative, counter-ideal, power structure, and influence, said Mahfuj Alam, adviser to the interim government.
In a Facebook post at around 2:30am today (6 February), he stressed the need to shift focus from destruction to reconstruction in the new order.
"We are facing regional and global hegemony, not just mere structures. Instead of breaking idols, we must build counter-ideals, power, and hegemony," he said.
Referring to the recently ousted ruling party and its leader, Sheikh Hasina Mahfuj said, "The League or Hasina, in essence, are nothing but extensions of regional hegemony. This hegemony has been built through a realistic state vision, skilled human resources both domestically and within the diaspora, and strong state institutions. Our counter-hegemony must rely on these three aspects as well."
He stressed that the opportunity to build has arrived after years of dismantling. However, an indefinite continuation of destruction will not ensure a better future.
"The reconstruction projects must commence and be implemented swiftly. Be actively involved in building," he urged.
Mahfuj also mentioned that the implementation of the Reform Commission's recommendations would soon begin, alongside efforts to rehabilitate families of the wounded and deceased and ensure justice for the July massacre.
"These efforts will gain momentum within this month," he added.
He further cautioned against reacting to remarks made by Sheikh Hasina, holding regional hegemony responsible for political unrest.
"The regional hegemony will be accountable for any political instability that arises from the dissemination of Hasina's statements and the reactions they provoke. This is why we must foster creative forces and adopt long-term strategies instead of merely reacting. This battle has just begun, and it may take at least a decade to reach a resolution. Yet, we are barely prepared for it," he said.
Mahfuj urged that the negative energy of anger, resentment, and hatred be transformed into constructive action.
"The post-uprising period offered us the opportunity to channel these emotions into positive change. That opportunity is not yet lost," he wrote.
He concluded by emphasising the need for long-term strategic thinking and preparation for an extended democratic and anti-hegemony struggle.
"The future is ahead of us, and history has given us this opportunity. We must win, and the only way to do so is by developing a state vision, strengthening institutions, and fostering a skilled and dignified workforce," he said, adding, "May Allah grant us foresight."
