Dhaka in touch with Moscow over possible impact on Bangladeshis in Amur fire

Bangladesh is in contact with the Russian authorities through its Mission in Moscow to ascertain whether any Bangladeshi nationals have been affected by a fire that broke out at the construction site of the Amur Gas Chemical Complex (AGCC) in Russia's Amur Region.

"We will update you if we receive any specific information. We are working on it," a diplomatic source told UNB today (27 August).

The AGCC is one of the world's largest enterprises for production of polyethylene and polypropylene of the brands in-demand in the Russian and global markets.

The production capacity of the complex will be up to 2.7 million tons of finished products per year.

The burnout of residual process gases is currently being completed under the supervision of specialists.

An investigation of the scene has begun.

During search and rescue operations, the bodies of four Chinese citizens, employees of a contractor, were found.

This brings the death toll to seven: one Russian citizen and six Chinese citizens.

The fate of nine additional Chinese citizens, employees of the contractor, remains unknown. Search and rescue operations continue.

A total of 152 people sought medical attention. Based on examination results, 36 victims were hospitalized with injuries of varying severity.

The remaining 116 people received medical care and did not require hospitalisation.

A special Il-76 flight from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations arrived to transport some of the hospitalized people to federal medical facilities. The victims and their families are receiving psychological support.

Specialists from the Amur Region Office of Rospotrebnadzor and the Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology are conducting laboratory monitoring of the atmospheric air at the edge of the residential development in Svobodny.
