US Army launches $2.2b project Janus to build nuclear microreactors by 2028
The US Army is launching Project Janus, a $2.2 billion nuclear microreactor programme designed to strengthen energy independence at five military bases. The plan aims to deploy its first operational reactor by September 2028, with reactors capable of producing up to 20 megawatts of power.
Five companies will build and operate the reactors at bases including Fort Bragg, Fort Campbell, Fort Hood, Fort Benning and Fort Drum. But Project Janus is also facing questions over high costs, safety risks and potential subsidies for nuclear companies.
