A total of 1,162 nomination papers have been distributed in four days for the Chittagong University Central Students' Union (Cucsu) and hall union elections.
As of today (17 September), 371 nomination papers have been submitted — 125 for Cucsu and 246 for the hall union. Besides, 39 students collected forms for the central union and 34 for the hall union.
Confirming the matter, Election Commissioner Professor AKM Ariful Haque Siddique told The Business Standard that, following student demands, the deadline for distributing and submitting nomination papers has been extended by one day.
"Candidates can now submit their nominations until 5pm tomorrow," he said.
According to the Cucsu election commission, of the 1,162 nomination papers distributed, 528 were for the central union and 634 for the hall union.
Like the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu), Chittagong University also extended the submission deadline following a written request from the Chhatra Dal.
This morning, CU unit Chhatra Dal General Secretary Abdullah Al Noman submitted the request to the commission, which later approved it in an emergency meeting.
Sources said Chhatra Dal plans to contest the election in coordination with students injured in the recent clash between local residents and students on campus. The organisation also plans to form a coalition with other groups to field a joint panel.
To coordinate, Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasir Uddin is now in Chattogram city, accompanied by three central leaders.
As per the election schedule, the preliminary list of candidates will be published on 21 September. The deadline for withdrawal of nominations is 23 September, while objections and settlements will be completed by 24 September.
The final list of candidates will be announced on 25 September.
The Cucsu and hall union elections are scheduled to be held on 12 October. The last edition took place in 1990, making this the first election at Chittagong University in 35 years.
