Crimes against humanity trial against Hasina, Kamal enters day 7 of witness testimony
The testimony is taking place at the International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mazumdar
The International Crimes Tribunal today (24 August) entered its seventh day of witness testimony in the trial of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal over alleged crimes against humanity during the July–August 2024 uprising.
The testimony is taking place at the International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mazumdar.
This morning, former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, who was previously an accused but has turned state witness, was brought to the tribunal to give his testimony.
Former army officer Ziaul Ahsan was also brought to testify in relation to an enforced disappearance case, while former minister of public administration Farhad Hossain appeared for another case.
The witness hearings against Hasina, Kamal and others began on 3 August. So far, 16 people have testified against the accused.
On Wednesday (20 August), four medical professionals, including two doctors and a nurse, gave evidence before the tribunal.
They described the conditions at hospitals in July and August last year, alleging that they faced obstruction while trying to provide medical care.
During their testimony, they demanded justice against Hasina, Kamal and the police.
The tribunal had earlier, on 10 July, ordered the start of trial proceedings against Hasina, Kamal and Mamun on charges of instigating and directing violence that allegedly resulted in the deaths of more than 1,400 people.
Of the three accused, Hasina and Kamal remain absconding. Mamun is in custody and is testifying as a state witness under the condition of full disclosure of the events under investigation.
