Ex-DGFI chief Masud ‘key mastermind’ of 1/11-era crimes against humanity: Chief prosecutor
He said investigators had already questioned the former army officer and obtained several pieces of information, which are now being verified.
Former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) Masud Uddin Chowdhury was the "key mastermind" behind crimes against humanity committed during the 1/11 period, according to International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam.
Masud would be made an accused in cases over crimes against humanity committed during that era, said Aminul, speaking to reporters at his ICT office today (10 May). "We will also charge him with any other crimes against humanity in which his involvement is found."
Masud, along with several others, was considered part of the "de facto government" during the regime, the chief prosecutor added. "The entire government was apparently run by them. As a result, all the inhumane incidents of that period took place."
He added that investigators interrogated the former army officer a few days back and obtained several pieces of information, which are now being verified.
Aminul said the prosecution had sought a production warrant to show Masud arrested in one of the cases.
Responding to a question about the role of the 1/11 regime, Aminul reiterated that Masud and several others effectively controlled the administration during that period.
He further alleged that the former DGFI chief had links to "many activities" during both the 1/11 government and the "fascist rule" of now ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The ICT-2 today set 21 July to submit the probe report in a case over crimes against humanity committed during the uprising in Feni, the chief prosecutor said.
He also said allegations had emerged against Masud over the suppression of protests during the July Uprising in Feni, adding that the ongoing investigation was uncovering more details.
