Police have detained a youth on charges of attempting to rape a five-year-old child in Kaliganj Upazila of Satkhira.
The suspect, identified as Abhijit Nandi, 23, hailing from Ghushuri village under Champaphul union of the upazila, was held by the police last night (12 June).
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jewel Hossain stated he was detained after the police were informed of the child rape attempt.
"The process of taking legal action against the detained youth is currently underway," he added.
According to the victim's father, the incident took place about two months ago on the afternoon of 5 April.
The child and her mother were bathing in a pond adjacent to their rented house, where their neighbour, Abhijit, was also bathing.
After completing her bath, the mother called the five-year-old to return home with her, but the child stayed behind.
Shortly afterwards, the mother heard her daughter screaming and rushed back to the pond.
Upon arrival, she reportedly saw Abhijit leaving the spot while the child was crying.
The child's father alleged that the youth had physically assaulted and attempted to rape the minor girl.
