Narayanganj businessman shot as Chhatra Dal leader reportedly opens fire to free detained BCL leader

A businessman was shot in Narayanganj on Tuesday (10 June) after a local Chhatra Dal leader reportedly opened fire to free a Chhatra League leader from police custody.
The incident took place in Majhipara area of Rupganj upazila this afternoon, Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Liaqat Ali confirmed to The Business Standard.
The victim has been identified as local LPG cylinder trader Mamun Bhuiyan.
He is currently undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said OC Liaqat.
The accused shooter has been identified as Zaidul Islam Babu, former publicity secretary of the district Chhatra Dal. "The accused Babu is absconding. No case has been filed in the incident yet. The victim's family is preparing to file a case."
He allegedly fired the shots to free Sabbir Hossain Khoka, former organising secretary of Bholta Chhatra League, from police custody.
Following the incident, an agitated mob beat Khoka up and handed him over to the police.
OC Liaqat said Khoka, who was injured in the mob beating, is also undergoing treatment at Dhaka's NITOR.
Local sources said Khoka had held a flash procession even after 5 August 2024, following the Awami League's ouster. This morning, locals caught Khoka in the Majhipara area and informed the police, who then detained him.
Babu then reportedly went to the spot and fired indiscriminately at the crowd in an attempt to free Khoka.
Meanwhile, Babu's uncle, Narayanganj district Swechchhasebak Dal Convener Mahbubur Rahman, claimed that his nephew was innocent.
"I immediately looked into the matter after hearing about the incident. I asked Babu. He said he was not involved and that some people from Murapara Union went there and caused a scene. He said he did not even go to the spot," Mahbubur told TBS.
