A man accused in 23 cases was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla last night (25 July).
The incident took place around 11:30pm at the Gourinagar bus station on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway.
The deceased, Al Mamun, 40, was the son of Mosharraf Hossain alias Mokbul Member of Sholakandi village in Cumilla's Titas upazila.
According to police and local sources, Mamun had been accused in multiple cases, including murder, extortion, tender manipulation, and arms and drug-related offences.
On 25 February, Mamun was arrested at a joint police and army checkpoint at the Gourinagar intersection with 180 pieces of yaba tablets and 30 litres of locally made liquor. He was sent to jail and later released on bail, after which he is believed to have gone into hiding in Dhaka.
Daudkandi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Junaet Chowdhury said Mamun, described as a top criminal, boarded a bus from Dhaka on Friday night with three women, intending to travel to Cox's Bazar.
"When the bus stopped at Gourinagar, Mamun got down to buy water. At that moment, three or four assailants attacked him with sharp weapons. He died on the spot due to severe injuries," the OC said.
"Upon receiving information, police went to the scene and recovered the body. The motive behind the killing will be known after investigation," he added.
Police said Mamun had 23 cases filed against him with various police stations, including those in Daudkandi and Titas.
