Judicial inquiry ordered into Sylhet rape

The High Court (HC) Tuesday ordered a judicial probe into the rape of a housewife at Sylhet MC College dormitory.

The three-member committee headed by the Sylhet Nari O Shishu Nirjatan Tribunal has been tasked with the investigation of gang rape. The HC ordered the committee to submit the report within the next 15 days.

Besides, Sylhet police commissioner was instructed to provide security to the probe committee and lend all-out cooperation.

The court also vented annoyance over the role of the college principal and hostel super, and issued a rule asking for an explanation within four weeks as to why it shall not order action against them.

The HC bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim passed the order in a writ hearing on Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday morning, Supreme Court Lawyer Hafiz Mohammad Misbah Uddin filed the writ at the HC seeking a judicial inquiry and challenging the role of the local administration and college authorities regarding the gang rape incident.

The lawyer himself argued for the writ.

The housewife was gang-raped allegedly by Chhatra League men at the Sylhet MC College dorm  last Friday night when she and her husband went to visit the college.

A group of six or seven culprits dragged her into the dormitory and raped her after beating and tying up the husband, police said.

Being informed, police rescued the couple from the dormitory area around 10:30 pm. The husband on Saturday filed a case at the local police station accusing nine people of the crime.

Police arrested seven people until Tuesday afternoon in the case. Meantime, two guards of the college have been suspended and the college has formed a three-member probe committee.

The education ministry also formed another inquiry committee to look into whether the college authorities had any lacking in management.
