A fish trader was hacked to death with a Chinese axe in Bishwanath upazila of Sylhet yesterday (22 August).
The victim was identified as Robiul Islam (38), son of late Asmot Ali from Noyasatpur village under Deokalash union.
The incident took place at local tea vendor Shomshu Mia's shop before Friday prayers.
Locals apprehended the alleged attacker, Anhar Ali (30), and handed him over to police. Anhar is reportedly involved in cannabis trading.
Bishwanath Police Station Officer-in-Charge Enamul Haque Chowdhury said Robiul died after being attacked by Anhar during a scuffle.
According to locals, the killing occurred after Robiul protested Anhar's drug business. Witnesses said the two were chatting at the tea shop when Anhar began hurling abuses at people who owed him money for cannabis. Robiul objected, leading to a scuffle. Shortly afterward, Anhar fetched a Chinese axe from his home and struck Robiul on the right side of his back, killing him on the spot.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Robiul's family is preparing to file a murder case with the police, said OC Enamul.
