Hand grenades, bullets and cannabis recovered from Teknaf salt field
However, no arrests were made as the suspects managed to flee the scene before the operation was completed
The Bangladesh Coast Guard has recovered 10 hand grenades, 28 rounds of ammunition and 2kg of cannabis allegedly buried underground by an armed group in a salt field in Teknaf of Cox's Bazar.
Lieutenant Commander Md Muttakin Siddiqui, station commander of Coast Guard Teknaf, disclosed the information during a press briefing held at the Teknaf Coast Guard Station office on this afternoon (14 June).
However, no arrests were made as the suspects managed to flee the scene before the operation was completed.
Lieutenant Commander Muttakin said that the force had received intelligence at around 10pm last night that members of an armed group had concealed weapons and drugs underground near the border, allegedly for smuggling purposes.
Acting on the information, a Coast Guard team conducted a raid in the area. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the suspects fled, he said.
"A subsequently conducted search operation in the salt field led to the discovery of 10 hand grenades, 28 bullets, and 2 kg of cannabis buried under the soil," the official said.
He added, "The recovered hand grenades are similar to those used by the Myanmar Army. An armed group had stockpiled these items, utilising the Bangladeshi border either for smuggling or for carrying out subversive activities."
He assured that the Coast Guard is continuing its efforts to identify and detain those involved in storing the recovered weapons. Legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently underway at the Teknaf Police Station.
