Police today (12 March) arrested a youth on suspicion of killing his friend over an alleged extramarital affair in Chattogram yesterday (11 March).
The arrestee has been identified as Md Sizan, 25, who is a friend of the victim, Aiyub Nabi Sagar, 26, said police.
The incident occurred at the CDA Balur Mat in the city's Dakshin Halishahar area.
"The murder was initially clueless. Using our sources, we contacted the victim's wife to confirm his identity. Within three hours, we managed to arrest Sizan," Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Port Zone Mahmudul Hasan told The Business Standard.
He said, "The victim had suffered four stab wounds in different parts of his body. We have recovered the knife used in the murder. The victim's body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College for an autopsy."
Sagar's father, Mojaher Mia, has filed a murder case, naming three suspects, including the arrested Sizan.
Police continue their efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects, the officer added.
The officer further said, "During interrogation, Sizan confessed that the murder was driven by suspicion that the victim, Sagar, was having an affair with another accused Simon's wife. However, when questioned, the victim's wife denied any such relationship.
"We will investigate the claim further," he said.
Regarding the suspects' background, the officer stated, "Neither the victim nor the accused had stable jobs. They were involved in drug abuse and often spent time loitering around the area. Their wives, however, worked in garment factories and provided for their families."
