He died around 7:30am yesterday (23 March), and his body has been kept at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue, according to police and prison officials.
Savar Model Police Station Inspector (Operations) Md Helal Uddin told The Business Standard, "He was taken to DMCH in an unconscious state early in the morning [on Monday], where doctors declared him dead."
Samrat, also known as "Psycho Samrat", was originally named Sabuj Sheikh.
Md Jannat-ul Farhad, assistant inspector general (development) of the Department of Prisons, also told TBS that Samrat, who had a history of drug addiction, had been undergoing psychiatric treatment for the past month.
He said Samrat was found in an unconscious condition and rushed to DMCH, where doctors confirmed his death. "We suspect he died in his sleep."
Farhad added that the body remains at the DMCH morgue and has yet to be claimed by any relative.
According to police, Samrat was allegedly involved in a series of seven murders in the Savar area between 2025 and 2026.
Investigators said he used an abandoned community centre in Savar municipality as a "death trap", luring victims there before killing them. He was arrested on 18 January this year.
