Dhaka North files case over attack, vandalism during Mirpur eviction drive
During the drive, the attackers, armed with iron rods and bamboo sticks, suddenly launched an assault and pelted officials and employees with bricks and stones.
The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) filed a case last night (11 December) against 31 named individuals and 200 to 250 unidentified persons in connection with a violent attack on a mobile court team and the vandalism of government vehicles during an eviction drive in the Mirpur-1 area on 9 December.
The case was filed by DNCC Surveyor Md Taslim Hossain with the Mirpur Shah Ali Police Station under various sections of the Penal Code, including those related to obstructing government work, assault, attempted murder, and vandalism (Sections 143/186/332/333/307/353/427), according to a DNCC press release.
The First Information Report (FIR), as mentioned in the release, states the incident took place at around 1:50pm on 9 December. The DNCC eviction drive, led by Executive Magistrate Marufa Begum Nely, was aimed at clearing footpaths and paved roads occupied by illegal structures near the Shaheed Minar, playground, and children's park in Mirpur Section-13.
Officials and staff from the DNCC Property Division, Court-1, and Zone-2 were part of the operation.
During the drive, the attackers, including the 31 listed individuals and a large group of 200–250 unidentified persons, suddenly launched an assault. They were armed with iron rods and bamboo sticks, and they pelted officials and employees with bricks and stones.
The release states that the group obstructed government officials from carrying out their duties and attacked the executive magistrate's team with the intent to murder.
The attackers caused significant damage to official property, vandalising the government vehicles used in the operation, the executive magistrate's car, two payloaders, and a backhoe loader.
The total estimated loss from the vandalism is approximately Tk13.80 lakh, according to Dhaka North City Corporation.
Several city corporation employees were injured in the attack, including the magistrate's driver, Md Raju Mia, backhoe driver Abed, payloader driver Royel, and a cleaning worker.
The delay in filing the case was attributed to the time needed to ensure treatment for the injured employees and to collect the names and addresses of the assailants.
The release states that the "abominable attack" on an eviction drive conducted in the public interest is deeply regrettable and confirms that necessary measures are being taken to bring all culprits to justice.
