DNCC to deploy cleaners in day and night shifts across 10 regions
Dhaka North City Corporation will deploy cleaners in all 10 regions in day and night shifts as part of efforts to build a cleaner Dhaka, DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan has said.
He said cleaners would work in two night-time shifts in addition to regular daytime operations to strengthen cleanliness activities across DNCC areas.
The administrator said an open tender process is already underway to accelerate cleaning operations in 26 wards of DNCC.
Steps have also been taken to bring the existing van service for household waste collection under the city corporation's management, he said.
Md Shafiqul Islam Khan said measures have been taken to remove waste left on major roads through QRT and mobile teams.
He directed officials to ensure regular monitoring to prevent waste from piling up anywhere in DNCC areas.
The administrator said DNCC is working to ensure full and proper use of all vehicles and equipment currently used for waste management.
At the same time, necessary steps are being taken to procure additional vehicles and equipment for waste management.
Initiatives have also been taken to collect modern compactor trucks, hook-lift trucks and other waste management vehicles. This will make the waste collection system faster, more modern and more effective.
DNCC has also started distributing waste bins to ensure proper waste segregation and collection.
As part of an initial move to assess the effectiveness of plastic bins, DNCC has distributed 500 bins — 250 green and 250 yellow — along with 50,000 polybags under its own management. The activity will continue.
Md Shafiqul Islam Khan said an environment-friendly modern waste management system would be developed under the Aminbazar landfill expansion and modernisation project through waste-to-energy generation.
Under the project, waste volume will be reduced by generating 42.5MW of electricity from waste.
According to the agreement, around 3,000 tonnes of solid waste will be used daily for power generation. The waste will be burned at a specified temperature at an incineration plant in line with the approval of the Department of Environment to generate up to 42.5MW of electricity.
A Waste Supply Agreement and a Land Use Agreement have been signed between Dhaka North City Corporation and CMEC's Bangladesh SPV company, WTE Power Plant North Dhaka Private Limited. The project activities will begin soon.
The DNCC administrator also said major drains would be cleaned to address waterlogging, while floating waste is being removed from selected canals.
"Our goal is to complete the cleaning of major drains quickly and make important canals free of waste. Steps have already been taken to this end," he said.
He said public participation is essential to build a cleaner Dhaka.
Awareness activities through the media, social media, educational institutions, religious institutions and ward-based campaigns will continue, he added.
Calling on city residents to cooperate, the DNCC administrator said, "We should not dump waste indiscriminately outside designated places. With public cooperation, it will be possible to build a 'Clean Dhaka, Green Dhaka."
