Hawkers attack Dhaka North officials during eviction drive in Mirpur
At least 6 DNCC officials and staff have been injured in the attack
A Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) eviction team came under attack in Mirpur-1 today (9 December) as they moved to clear hawkers and illegal structures from the sidewalk.
Several DNCC vehicles were vandalised in the incident, and at least six officers and staff members were injured.
Mohammad Benazir Ahmed, assistant chief waste management officer (additional duty) of DNCC zone-2, said the attack occurred shortly after an eviction drive at the Mirpur-13 Shaheed Minar playground and children's park.
He said when the team proceeded to remove illegal shops along the Mirpur-1 road under Ward-8, a group of hawkers and shopkeepers launched a coordinated attack.
"One of our outsourced cleaning workers, Abdur Rahman of Ward-4, was struck by a brick and suffered a head injury. I was also injured in the leg. Several police personnel were hurt. The magistrate's vehicle was vandalised and its driver injured. Other DNCC vehicles were also attacked," Benazir told The Business Standard.
Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Shah Ali Police Station, said the DNCC magistrate and accompanying officials were attacked between 1:30pm and 2:00pm.
He added that the glass of the magistrate's car was shattered as traders chased the team away.
"No formal complaint has been filed yet. Legal action will be taken upon receipt of a complaint," the OC said.
