Dashcam catches daring escape as robbers attempt hijacking vehicles by felling trees in Savar
"As I was fleeing, they attacked the car, smashing the left-side door and the rear glass. My passengers were terrified, but thankfully, we managed to get away safely," the driver said
A group of armed robbers attempted to hijack vehicles by placing trees across a regional road in the Birulia area of Savar late Thursday night (21 January). While the criminals failed to loot any valuables, they vandalised a sedan as the driver made a daring escape in the car.
The incident occurred at around 3:15am on the Rajashon-Birulia road under Birulia union.
A video of the ordeal, captured by the sedan's dashcam, has since gone viral on social media, sparking widespread concern over nighttime security on regional highways.
According to police and witnesses, the gang of robbers placed large tree branches across the road to trap commuters.
Golam Azam Al Amin, the driver of the car, told The Business Standard that he was returning from a wedding ceremony in the Karnapara area, dropping off guests in Akrain.
"As I approached the spot, I saw a tanker lorry and an autorickshaw stranded. Suddenly, four masked men armed with sharp local weapons rushed towards my car. I immediately locked all doors and windows," Azam recounted.
Seeing the road blocked by a tree, Azam decided not to stop. He drove the vehicle over the branches to escape.
"As I was fleeing, they attacked the car, smashing the left-side door and the rear glass. My passengers were terrified, but thankfully, we managed to get away safely," he added.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Al Amin, in-charge of the Birulia Police Outpost, said a patrol team was stationed just 500 yards away from the spot.
"We noticed the traffic flow had suddenly stopped and rushed to the scene. Upon hearing our whistles and seeing us approach, the robbers fled into the nearby darkness," he said.
Additionally, police found a truck and two other vehicles trapped at the blockade, but confirmed that the criminals were unable to rob anyone due to the swift police intervention.
Police maintained that although no formal written complaint has been filed by this time, they are actively investigating the matter and working to identify the four suspects involved.
