Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard seized a large consignment of Indian clothing and foreign cigarettes worth nearly Tk9 crore in Chattogram's Sitakunda on suspicion of tax evasion.
The seizure took place during a special drive conducted by Coast Guard Station Bhatiary on Saturday night (14 February) along the Dhaka–Chattogram highway near Chhoto Kumira Bazar under Sitakunda Police Station.
Confirming the matter on Sunday night, Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Siyam-Ul-Haque said the operation was carried out based on confidential information that a shipment of Indian sarees, three-piece sets, lehengas and foreign cigarettes would be smuggled through the area without paying customs duties.
During the drive, Coast Guard personnel searched a covered van and recovered a large quantity of Indian sarees, three-piece sets and lehengas, along with 1,298 cartons of foreign cigarettes.
The estimated market value of the seized goods is around Tk8.92 crore.
According to the Coast Guard, the driver and his assistant were released after giving written undertakings, and the covered van was also released.
