In Matlab North Upazila, Chandpur, a cash officer at the Chengarchar Bazaar branch of Agrani Bank is under suspicion for fleeing with Tk75.20 lakh from the bank's vault.

The incident was reported by branch manager Md Yusuf Mia, who lodged a formal complaint with the Matlab North Police Station on 2 September against the accused, Dipankar Ghosh (38), and other unidentified individuals. A four-member audit committee, led by Md Badal, a senior principal officer at Agrani Bank's Dhaka headquarters, has been appointed to investigate the matter.

Dipankar Ghosh, the son of Bolai Ghosh from Baliati village in Saturia Upazila, Manikganj District, joined Agrani Bank in 2019, initially serving at the Chengarchar Bazaar branch.

According to the case statement, Ghosh failed to report to the bank on 29 August. When contacted, he cited his father's illness as the reason for his delay. Subsequently, his phone was found to be switched off, and attempts to reach him through his wife, Akhi Shaha, revealed that he had left their Dhaka home for the bank.

The statement also indicates that due to Ghosh's absence and his possession of the vault keys, the vault remained unopened on 29 August. A general diary was subsequently filed on 30 August.

Branch Manager Yusuf Mia reported that Ghosh last worked on 28 August, with no further trace of him thereafter. On 1 September, the vault was forcibly opened by a locksmith in the presence of police, utilizing duplicate keys from the Chandpur main branch.

The audit disclosed a discrepancy between the vault's actual contents, amounting to Tk27,79,068, and the recorded cash position of Tk1,00,99,068, indicating a shortfall of Tk75.20 lakh.

Branch Manager Yusuf Mia commented to The Business Standard, "Dipankar's conduct was unremarkable until his final day at work. Given that he had the vault keys and failed to return, we suspect he has absconded with the funds. Senior bank officials have completed an audit, and the police are actively investigating the matter."

Matlab North Police Station's Investigation Inspector Md Sanwar Hossain confirmed the registration of the theft case and indicated that efforts are underway to apprehend the accused and recover the stolen money.
