Armed robbery in Munshiganj: 2 detained, seven rounds of bullets recovered
Md Tajul Islam, in-charge of the Shekarnagar Investigation Centre, confirmed the incident and said that police reached the scene immediately after the robbery and arrested one of the suspects, identified as Imran Bepari, 24.
An armed robbery took place in the dead of night at a house in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj, where masked robbers allegedly held the people in the house hostage at gunpoint and looted gold ornaments, cash, and other valuables.
One suspected member of the gang was later caught by locals and handed over to police, while another suspect was detained by police later along with seven rounds of ammunition.
The incident occurred around 3:00am today (25 July) at the house of Premananda Mondol in Kharkhola village under Chitrakot union of the upazila.
Md Tajul Islam, in-charge of the Shekarnagar Investigation Centre, confirmed the incident and said that police reached the scene immediately after the robbery and arrested one of the suspects, identified as Imran Bepari, 24.
Later, during a follow-up operation, another suspect, Shahin Howlader, 45, was also detained, Tajul said, adding that a case in connection with the incident is currently under process.
He further said that Premananda Mondol's family is financially well-off. One of his sons lives abroad, while the other works in Dhaka.
Police suspect the house was specifically targeted by the gang as part of a premeditated plan.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sirajdikhan Circle) Md Ibrahim said that one of the detained suspects is currently in police custody, while the other — who was beaten by the mob — is receiving treatment at a hospital.
"Although seven rounds of ammunition were recovered from the robbers, no weapons have been found so far. Efforts are ongoing to recover the weapons and apprehend the remaining members of the gang," Ibrahim said.
According to police, a group of eight to 10 masked robbers entered the house by cutting through the window grills.
Armed with sharp weapons and firearms, the gang held Premananda Mondol, his wife, son, and daughter-in-law hostage by tying up their hands and feet.
The robbers ransacked the home and looted 16 bhori of gold ornaments, one bhori and six ana of silver, Tk83,000 in cash, and 120 euros, police said.
Family member Pankaj Mondol said he was physically assaulted by the robbers during the ordeal.
"They had guns and sharp weapons. We were terrified as they tied us up and looted everything," he said.
