APBn constable held with 20,000 yaba tablets in Cox's Bazar
The detainee is a serving constable of the 8th APBn, deployed for security duties at the Rohingya camps in Ukhiya.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained a member of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) with 20,000 yaba tablets in Cox's Bazar's Ramu upazila.
The detainee, identified as Sajib Bepari, 23, was held during a drive at the Morichya checkpost in Khuniyapalong Union at around 6:15pm yesterday (1 May), officials said.
Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, commanding officer of BGB's Ramu 30 Battalion, said BGB personnel were conducting routine searches when they stopped an auto-rickshaw arriving from Teknaf.
During the search, the behaviour of one passenger appeared suspicious, prompting further questioning, he said.
"Later, 20,000 yaba tablets were recovered from the bag he was carrying," the officer added.
The detainee is the son of Md Abdur Rashid from the Nannar area under Dhamrai Police Station in Dhaka. He is a serving constable of the 8th APBn, deployed for security duties at the Rohingya camps in Ukhiya.
An identity card confirming his position in the APBn was recovered from him, officials said.
Additional Deputy Inspector General Reiaz Uddin Ahmed, commanding officer of the 8th APBn, said Sajib had left his workplace on leave on Thursday (30 April).
He said the matter is being investigated to determine how he became involved in drug smuggling, adding that departmental action would be taken in accordance with rules.
The BGB official said preparations are underway to file a case against the detainee with Ramu Police Station under the relevant laws.
