The second accused who escaped police custody from the Chattogram court premises has been arrested after a 30-hour manhunt across multiple districts today (7 May).

Anwar Hossain, an accused in a narcotics case, was captured around 2:30pm near Daudkandi Launch Terminal in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj district, said Md Russel, additional superintendent of police (Media) for the Chattogram district police.

"A special team of the district Detective Branch (DB) conducted a relentless operation across various areas of Chattogram, Noakhali, Cumilla, and Munshiganj for over 30 hours to apprehend Anwar Hossain," Russel said.

"Finally, during a high-intensity raid this afternoon, he was arrested," said ASP Russel.

The ASP added that legal proceedings are now underway against the arrestee.

On 29 April, Anwar Hossain and another prisoner, Md Iqbal Hossain Imon — an accused in a murder case — escaped police custody while being transferred to a prison van in the Chattogram court area after their court appearances.

According to court sources, the two had been brought from Chattogram Central Jail for scheduled hearings.

They managed to flee during the transfer process, prompting an immediate alert.

Later that same night, police arrested Imon from Tulatoli railway colony in the city's Khulshi area.

With both escapees now back in custody, law enforcement officials are expected to further investigate how the escape occurred and whether there were lapses in police protocol.
