The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved the charge sheet against expelled general secretary of Narsingdi Youth Women's League, Shamima Nur Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman alias Moti Sumon, in a case alleging illegal acquisition of assets.
ACC Secretary Dr Md Anwar Hossain Hawladar made the announcement on Thursday.
He said, a case was filed in August 2020 against Papia and her husband for acquiring and possessing assets worth Tk6,24,18,000. The investigating officer of the case, ACC Deputy Director Shaheen Ara Mumtaz, completed the inquiry and submitted the report.
According to the report, Papia and her husband Moti Sumon have illegally earned Tk5,84,18,718 through mutual connivance.
A charge sheet will soon be submitted against them to the court, the ACC secretary said.
Papia, Sumon and their two associates were arrested from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on 22 February last year. The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) seized passports, foreign currencies, and counterfeit notes from their possession.
In raids on Papia's homes in Dhaka and Narsingdi, Rab found a pistol, bullets, five bottles of foreign liquor, cash, bank cards and cheques. The couple was placed on remand twice (totaling 30 days) in narcotics, arms, and special power act cases.
In October last year, a Dhaka court jailed Shamima Nur Papia, and her husband Mofizur Rahman 20 years for possession of illegal firearms, and seven more years for possession of bullets.
