Eighty-one people have been arrested in Gazipur on the third day of the ongoing "Operation Devil Hunt".

With these, a total of 246 people, suspected to be activists of the fallen Awami League, have so far been arrested.

Special Branch's Deputy Commissioner Alamgir Hossain said they arrested 69 accused from different areas of the city overnight.

Gazipur Superintendent of Police Chowdhury Md Jaber Sadek said they arrested 12 people from parts of the district.

Earlier, the metropolitan and district police arrested 65 people yesterday and on Sunday 21 people were arrested by the district police and 79 people by the metropolitan police.

Locals alleged that the root-level activists of the Awami League are being arrested but those who attacked the protesters during the anti-government movement last year are still at large.

The government announced the operation following an attack on some activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at the residence of former minister AKM Mozammel Haque in Gazipur last Friday night, which left 18 people injured.

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee later staged demonstrations demanding the arrest of those involved in the attack.

The day after this incident, on Saturday, the convener of the Gazipur anti-discrimination movement, Md Abdullah Mohit, filed a case with Gazipur Sadar police station as the plaintiff. The case names 239 people and accuses 200 to 300 unidentified people.

The main accused in the case is Amjad Hossain Molla, an Awami League activist and nephew of freedom fighter Minister Mozammel Haque.
