3 sent to jail over DU student killing

A Dhaka court today (14 May) sent three people to jail in a case filed over the killing of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a Dhaka University (DU) student and a leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam passed the order when police produced them before the court with a plea to send them to prison.

Earlier yesterday (13 May), police arrested the trio identified as Tamim Hawladar, 30, Palash Sardar, 30 and Samrat Mallik, 28—from the capital.

Shamyo, a student of the 2018–19 sessions at the Institute of Education and Research, and literary and publication secretary of Chhatra Dal's AF Rahman Hall unit, was stabbed in an attack at Suhrawardy Udyan near the campus.

Later, he was taken to the hospital where the doctors on duty declared him dead.

A case was filed against 10-12 people with Shahbagh Police Station.
