ICT permits interrogation of Dipu Moni, Farzana Rupa, Mozammel Babu in Shapla Chattar case
The tribunal also set 10 August for the submission of the investigation report in the case
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has permitted investigators to interrogate former minister Dipu Moni, journalists Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu in a crimes against humanity case over deaths linked to Hefazat-e-Islam's rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel in 2013.
The tribunal also set 10 August for the submission of the investigation report in the case.
A two-member bench of ICT-1, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, passed the order today (7 June).
During the hearing, the prosecution sought permission to interrogate Dipu Moni, Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu separately for one day each.
Prosecution also requested an additional two months to submit the investigation report, citing progress in the probe. Following the hearing, the tribunal allowed the applications.
Nine accused in the case were brought before the tribunal from prison for the hearing this morning.
The other accused are former state minister for home affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, Major General (retired) Ziaul Ahsan, former inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Hoque, former deputy inspector general (DIG) of police Mollah Nazrul Islam, Shahriar Kabir, president of the advisory council of the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, and former DIG Abdul Jalil Mondal.
According to the prosecution, 58 people were killed in four locations across the country, including Dhaka, during violence surrounding Hefazat's rally on 5 May 2013.
The investigation agency has identified 32 victims in Dhaka, 20 in Narayanganj, five in Chattogram and one in Cumilla.
Although the investigation report was scheduled to be submitted today, the prosecution sought additional time in the interest of the investigation, the tribunal was told.
