Chamber court stays HC bail of journalists Shakil Ahmed, Farzana Rupa in 10 cases
The cases include murder and attempted murder allegations during the July uprising
The chamber court Appellate Division's today (7 June) stayed the High Court (HC) order granting bail to journalists Shakil Ahmed and his wife Farzana Rupa in 10 cases, including charges of murder and attempted murder linked to the July movement.
Chamber Judge Md Rezaul Haque passed the order following petitions filed by the state, according to court sources.
Earlier, on 11 May, the High Court's bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher granted bail to Shakil Ahmed in five cases and to Farzana Rupa in six cases.
The state later filed petitions with the Appellate Division seeking a stay on the bail orders in 10 cases.
Shakil Ahmed served as head of news at Ekattor Television, while Farzana Rupa worked as the channel's chief reporter.
Following the fall of the Awami League government in 2024, Ekattor Television removed both journalists from their positions on 8 August.
Police detained the couple from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on 21 August while they were boarding a Turkish Airlines flight bound for Paris.
