Top-listed criminal Mamun killing: 5, including 2 'shooters', placed on 4-day remand
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhattacharjee passed the order after a hearing today (12 November)
A Dhaka court has placed five accused, including two alleged professional shooters, on a four-day remand in a case filed under the Arms Act in connection with the killing of top-listed criminal Tarik Saif Mamun, who was gunned down in broad daylight in front of the Dhaka National Medical College Hospital in Old Dhaka on 10 November.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhattacharjee passed the order after a hearing today (12 November), according to court sources.
Yesterday, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested the five accused from different areas of Sylhet, Narsingdi and Dhaka.
The arrestees are Faruk Hossain Faisal, 38, alias "Kutta Faruk", Robin Ahmed alias Piyas, 25, Md Yusuf Jibon, 42, Md Rubel, 34, and Shamim Ahmed, 22.
According to detectives, Faruk and Robin are professional contract killers.
In the remand petition, police said the arrestees had confessed to their involvement during preliminary questioning and admitted knowledge about the seized firearms and ammunition.
Investigators claimed the accused were active members of an organised armed criminal group involved in multiple killings, robberies, and extortion activities across Dhaka and nearby areas for monetary gain.
The petition further stated that the suspects should be brought into remand to uncover details of the crime, trace additional weapons, identify unknown accomplices, and gather further intelligence necessary for the investigation.
Defence lawyers opposed the remand plea and sought bail, arguing that no case had yet been filed by the victim's family and that the accused were falsely implicated.
State counsel Jamal Uddin Khandaker opposed the bail petition, saying, "Shooters Faruk and Robin were paid Tk2 lakh to carry out the killing."
He also noted the need for remand to verify whether political links or instigators were involved.
According to the case statement, Mamun, 55, a resident of Lakshmipur Sadar upazila, was shot dead in front of Dhaka National Medical College Hospital in Old Dhaka's Sutrapur area around 11am on 10 November.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed that Robin and Faruk shot Mamun multiple times to ensure his death, acting on orders from "Rony Bhai". Police later recovered bullets used in the killing from Yusuf Jibon's residence in Rayer Bazaar, Mohammadpur.
Following the incident, Sub-Inspector Krish Kumar Das of the DB's Lalbagh division (Kotwali Zonal Team) filed the case.
According to DB, the killing stemmed from an ongoing feud between underworld rivals Emon and Mamun, notorious figures in Old Dhaka's crime world.
DB officials identified the mastermind behind the murder as Roni, a former grocery shop owner turned gangster living in Dhaka's Kafrul and a close associate of gangster Emon.
Roni, who remains on the run, allegedly paid Tk2 lakh and supplied weapons to carry out the murder.
