Underworld feud led to Mamun's murder; 2 shooters got paid Tk1 lakh each: DB
Officials said the killing stemmed from an ongoing feud between underworld rivals Emon and Mamun, notorious figures in Old Dhaka’s crime world.
An underworld feud led to the recent shooting death of top Old Dhaka criminal Tarik Saif Mamun, with two of his two shooters being paid Tk1 lakh each for the murder, Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) chief Md Shafiqul Islam said today (12 November).
Speaking at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre, Shafiqul said the DB has arrested five people, including the two shooters, over the killing of the 55-year-old.
The arrested shooters are Faruk alias "Kutta Faruk" and Robin. The other three are Yusuf, Rubel and Shamim.
According to detectives, Faruk and Robin are professional contract killers.
Officials said the killing stemmed from an ongoing feud between underworld rivals Emon and Mamun, notorious figures in Old Dhaka's crime world.
Police recovered two pistols used in the murder, cash paid as remuneration and a motorcycle used in the attack during the arrests.
DB officials identified the mastermind behind the murder as Roni, a former grocery shop owner turned gangster living in Dhaka's Kafrul and a close associate of gangster Emon.
Roni, who remains on the run, allegedly paid Tk2 lakh and supplied weapons to carry out the murder.
The DB chief said that on 10 November, as Mamun was entering National Medical College Hospital, two gunmen opened fire, critically injuring him.
He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
After the killing, detectives launched an investigation, collected CCTV footage from the surrounding areas, and identified the suspects based on intelligence and video analysis.
Separate raids were conducted in Sylhet, Narsingdi and Dhaka, leading to the arrests and recovery of evidence.
Police arrested Faruk, Robin Shamim and Rubel last night in Velanagar under Narsingdi Sadar upazila.
From Faruk and Robin's possession, the DB recovered Tk1.53 lakh, which they said is part of the Tk2 lakh payment Rony had made for the killing.
The DB chief further revealed that after the murder, Faruk and Robin handed over the weapons and unused bullets to Rubel, a rent-a-car driver, on Roni's instructions.
According to him, Rubel then contacted Roni, who ordered him to stash the weapons.
Acting on this lead, the DB later raided Yusuf's residence in Rayerbazar, recovering two foreign-made pistols, six rounds of ammunition and two magazines hidden under the floor.
Yusuf and Rubel reportedly told police that Rubel left the bag containing the firearms with Yusuf for safekeeping on the day of the murder.
How it happened according to DB
According to detectives, Roni, a close associate of gangster Emon, had made multiple failed attempts to kill Mamun earlier with help from Faruk.
The group decided to strike on 10 November, as it was the day Mamun was scheduled to appear in court.
The night before the killing, Roni reportedly summoned Robin to his home to finalise the plan.
On the morning of the murder, Roni called Robin at around 9am and told him to go to the court area. Robin went there with Shamim, who was driving. Meanwhile, Roni sent Faruk and others to the area as well.
According to the plan, Roni had first instructed Suman and Faruk to carry out the shooting.
At one stage, an argument broke out between Roni and Suman, prompting Roni to take two pistols from Suman, give one to Faruk and the other to Robin, and send them on the mission to kill Mamun.
Another fugitive, Kamal, was assigned to follow Mamun and report his movements to the shooters.
Following that order, Kamal stayed close to Mamun and alerted Faruk and Robin.
They then fired multiple shots at Mamun to ensure his death.
After the shooting, the duo left the scene through the Beribadh area and went to Rayerbazar, where, under Roni's instructions, Rubel collected the firearms and ammunition from Faruk and Robin and handed them to his friend Yusuf for safekeeping.
Later, acting on Roni's orders, Rubel gave Tk1 lakh each to the shooters Faruk and Robin from the Tk2 lakh payment he had received for the murder.
Later, following Roni's plan and instructions, Faruk, Robin and Shamim were sent from Dhaka toward Sylhet, with Rubel accompanying them as a travel companion.
Immediately after the incident, Roni confiscated the mobile phones used by Faruk, Robin, Rubel and Shamim to prevent law enforcement from tracking or identifying them in any way.
They first went to Sylhet and attempted to enter India through the efforts of Robin and Rubel.
Failing to secure any means of entry into India there, they left Sylhet, intending to cross the Satkhira border to enter the neighbouring country, and set off towards Dhaka.
They were arrested by detectives en route.
